Common Plumbing Issues That Don’t Get Addressed

    WashimBy WashimFebruary 12, 2025No Comments4 Mins Read31 Views

Plumbing is a complex and sophisticated system that is bound to experience issues from time to time. This is why it is advisable to get regular plumbing inspections done to avoid expensive repairs down the line.

There are many warning signs that you should look out for such as rattling noises coming from your pipes. If you notice a sudden increase in your water bill, it may be a sign of a plumbing issue.

    1. Clogged Drains

If there’s one issue that can quickly spiral out of control and cause major damage to your home, it’s clogged drains. Whether from soap scum, hair, or kitchen grease, clogged drains prevent plumbing water from flowing through pipes and into fixtures. This can lead to flooding, overflows, and leaks. Simple clogs are often easily fixed with a plunger or plumber’s snake, but serious problems may require a professional.

Clogged drains are more common in bathrooms, where dirt, skin flakes, and hair bind with soap scum to form gunk that impedes water flow. However, they can also happen in kitchen sinks and toilets, as well as outside drain lines. Thankfully, there are clues that can help you spot a clog before it becomes a nightmare. Standing water is a clear indicator, as are unpleasant odors or gurgling noises. Because plumbing systems are gravity-based, clogs will start with the lowest drain or fixture and work their way up.

    1. Leaky Pipes

Every homeowner will experience plumbing issues at some point. But, understanding these problems and how to address them can help homeowners save time and money.

While modern plumbing systems are a huge advancement in home safety and convenience, they can still suffer from everyday wear and tear. From clogged drains to pipe leaks, these issues can lead to costly repairs. But, there are things you can do to prevent them from happening in the first place.

Leaky pipes can cause serious water damage to your home and should be fixed immediately. Luckily, there are several signs you can watch out for to detect leaky pipes before they get worse.

Look for damp areas on your floor, walls, or ceiling. If you notice this, it’s a good idea to call a plumber for inspection. This is because the leak may be causing structural damage to your home or allowing harmful gases like sewage to enter. Leaky pipes should be repaired as soon as possible to avoid expensive repair bills.

    1. Burst Pipes

Unexpected pipe bursts can cause significant water damage in your home.

Fortunately, there are some warning signs you can watch out for that can help you to spot and address them in time. These include water stains on walls and ceilings, inexplicable drops in water pressure, and weird noises coming from your pipes.

Physical damage to your pipes can also increase the risk of bursting. This includes accidents such as a heavy object falling on them or construction work that damages the pipes underneath. Over time, older pipes can lose their structural integrity and become more prone to bursts.

You can check for broken pipes by monitoring your water meter. An unexplained increase in your water consumption can indicate that there is a leak or a burst pipe somewhere in your house. Also, listen for clanking, rattling or hissing sounds when you turn on your faucets. These are caused by water hammer that may lead to ruptured pipes.

    1. Frozen Pipes

Frozen pipes can lead to extensive water damage if left untreated. This is especially true for pipes that are exposed to frigid temperatures and/or run along exterior walls or in cold crawl spaces in older homes. Symptoms of frozen pipes include no water or a slow trickle coming out of faucets, whistling and banging sounds from toilets and sinks, and dampness or rings on drywall and ceilings.

If you suspect a pipe is frozen, turn off your home’s water supply and shut off the power to the affected area. Next, apply heat to the frozen area using a heating pad or hairdryer (never use a torch or anything flammable). It may help to wrap the frozen section of pipe in a towel soaked in hot water. Once the frozen ice melts, you can turn on your faucet and check for signs of leaks or further damage to your home. A licensed plumber can help you prevent frozen pipes in the future by insulating them and addressing any other issues that could contribute to their freezing.
